Been quits Feyenoord after player revolt

Feyenoord coach Mario Been has quit the Eredivisie club after players led a revolt against him.

Been oversaw Feyenoord’s disappointing 10th place finish last season, having joined the club in 2009.

Traditionally one of the powerhouses of Dutch football, Feyenoord have struggled to compete with rivals Ajax Amsterdam and PSV Eindhoven in recent campaigns, and it appears the club’s players have had enough.

The squad took a vote, with 20 out of 23 expressing their lack of faith in the coach, leading to Been s resignation hours later.

Been came to his decision yesterday after captain Ron Vlaar told technical director Martin Van Geel that the majority of players had lost confidence in any further cooperation with the coach, the club said in a statement. <…

Russia lift Euro Beach trophy

Russia staged a stunning comeback to beat Switzerland 6-4 in the final of the Euro Beach Soccer League on Sunday.

Switzerland led 4-1 in Moscow before Russia staged a remarkable recovery, with a double from Dmitry Shishin giving them their second title.

A hat-trick from tournament Most Valuable Player Dejan Stankovic had helped Switzerland to a three-goal lead, before Russia began their comeback.

Shishin s goals in the 33rd and 35th minutes saw them claim their second title after the 2009 success.

Meanwhile, Spain were relegated from Division A after suffering a 5-0 loss to Italy.

Zidane: Real Madrid are always favourites

Zinedine Zidane feels Real Madrid are the favourites in their Champions League semi-final tie with Manchester City, but has warned the Premier League side should not be taken lightly.

Speaking after the two clubs were drawn together in Friday s draw in Nyon, the French coach said Madrid s struggles against Wolfsburg in the quarter-finals were behind his call for caution.

The Liga side needed a Cristiano Ronaldo hat-trick in the second leg to turn things around after a 2-0 defeat in Germany in the first leg, and Zidane is adamant Madrid cannot afford to make the same mistakes.

Real Madrid are always the favourites and that s no different in the semi-final against Manchester City, Zidane said at a media conference.

But City are a great team. I do not want…

Hillsborough victims were unlawfully killed, says jury

A jury has concluded that the 96 people who died in the Hillsborough disaster were unlawfully killed.

The six women and three men finished their deliberations on Monday, having retired to consider more than two years of evidence during the inquiry into the events of the FA Cup match on April 15, 1989 between Nottingham Forest and Liverpool.

The decision comes after years of campaigning from bereaved families and the Hillsborough Justice Campaign, which sought the disclosure of the true causes behind the tragedy.

Coroner John Golding said he would accept a majority verdict on whether the 96 individuals were unlawfully killed, after the jury unanimously agreed on answers to a further 13 questions concerning the disaster. A verdict of seven to two was passed.

Pellegrini: West Ham feel at home in London Stadium

Manuel Pellegrini believes an upturn in the atmosphere at London Stadium is down to West Ham fans realising their club need a state-of-the-art ground.

West Ham s 2016 move from Upton Park to London Stadium has come under scrutiny in the past, but those issues seem to have been resolved this term.

And while Pellegrini acknowledged the team s performances on the pitch – West Ham are unbeaten at home in 2019 and are hunting a fourth successive win at London Stadium – have helped, the former Manchester City manager suggested that the Hammers faithful have now realised they are at a ground befitting of the club s ambition.

Maybe they all realise this team needs a big stadium. The old stadium I know was a beautiful stadium but it was too small for this team, Pell…

Bakayoko wants AC Milan switch

Milan are a legendary club. Who wouldn t like to stay at a club like Milan for a long time?

Having said that, I m still under contract with Chelsea for the next three years. I don t have all the cards.

Those are the words of Tiemoue Bakayoko who, during a recent interview, all but confirmed that he wants to make the jump over to AC Milan on a permanent basis. The 24 year old has been able to enjoy a solid spell of good form at the San Siro on loan from Stamford Bridge, but for whatever reason, it seems like Chelsea aren’t particularly interested in selling him on a permanent basis.

This is despite Bakayoko failing to impress Maurizio Sarri during pre-season, and despite the fact that Chelsea could likely use an injection of passion from someone like Bakayok…

Romelu Lukaku will not return for Inter before World Cup

Romelu Lukaku will not play again for Inter before going to the World Cup with Belgium, Simone Inzaghi has confirmed.

Lukaku s return to San Siro on loan this season has been disrupted by injury.

The Chelsea striker has been limited to just 255 minutes of action across five appearances in all competitions, starting three matches and scoring once.

Lukaku made his comeback from a thigh problem against Viktoria Plzen late last month but was quickly ruled out again.

Coach Inzaghi was initially hopeful Inter would see Lukaku before the Serie A season breaks for the World Cup, but he has now accepted defeat.

The Nerazzurri play Juventus on Sunday, then both Bologna and Atalanta next week.

Lukaku will hope to feature when Belgium begin their Qata…

Contrasting reports about Alcantara and Liverpool

Media reports about a potential move by Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich to Liverpool this summer are as contrasting as opinions on whether it would make sense for the newly crowned Premier League champions to actually sign the midfielder or not.

Stories first broke out about Thiago s reluctance to agree a new deal with his current club and his wish to try his rarely disputed qualities in the English top flight, with Liverpool his first choice among potential destinations. The initial rumour itself was greeted with excitement from a large portion of the Reds supporters, but also with a word of caution from some who didn t consider the move likely.

And then, on Saturday afternoon, Italian journalist that Liverpool had agreed personal terms with the former Barcelona m…

Ireland’s ‘overly physical’ Women’s World Cup warm-up against Colombia abandoned

The Republic of Ireland’s behind-closed-doors match against Colombia ahead of the Women’s World Cup was abandoned after 20 minutes after becoming “overly physical”.

The PA news agency understands the decision was made following some rough challenges in Friday’s contest at Brisbane’s Meakin Park, and that Ireland midfielder Denise O’Sullivan was taken to hospital and is set to undergo a scan after sustaining a shin injury.

A statement from the Football Association of Ireland said: “The behind-closed-doors game between the Ireland women’s national team and Colombia on Friday evening was ended after 20 minutes of play.

“The game, which was held in Meakin Park, Brisbane, became overly physical and it was decided, following consultation with the ma…

Republic of Ireland ready to bounce back after dramatic World Cup warm-up clash

Defender Heather Payne says it is back to business as usual for the Republic of Ireland after a dramatic Friday night that saw their behind-closed-doors friendly with Colombia aborted and midfielder Denise O’Sullivan taken to hospital with a suspected shin injury.

The World Cup warm-up in Brisbane was abandoned after 20 minutes due to what the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) would later explain in a statement was as a result of it becoming “overly physical”.

Initial scans revealed O’Sullivan had not sustained any fractures, with an update expected during Monday afternoon’s training session – just three sleeps away from the Girls in Green’s World Cup debut against Australia on Thursday night.

While they will be hoping for more encouraging news …
